It’s not uncommon for multiple disparate systems to need to communicate with each other, and it has been this way for as long as I can remember. And not just in large, complex environments. With the advent of the cloud and the proliferation of solutions, even a small business may want to integrate its ERP with other solutions.

If dealing with modern applications, integrations rely on APIs (Application Programming Interface). APIs are a set of rules and protocols governing communication between systems.

If you use or deploy Business Central, it’s a safe bet that you will have to set up an integration with another solution. In this case, what to do?

First of all, if your integration takes form on the Microsoft cloud and the objective is for Business Central to exchange data with Sharepoint, Teams, D365 Sales or PowerBI for example, you will be well served by preconfigured communication protocols or even flexible configuration tools. This is one of the strengths of the Microsoft solutions portfolio and the interoperability of the Microsoft 365 and Dynamics 365 platforms.

In addition, Business Central offers access to preconfigured APIs as well as Web Services (programmable APIs) allowing other external applications that need to transmit or obtain data to do so with a certain ease.

Some connectors have been developed and are available on the market to bridge Business Central with other solutions. For instance, think about Shopify or Hubspot connectors. However, considering the multitude of applications that Business Central could potentially communicate with, it is not unusual to have to code an entirely new integration.
