HIGHLIGHTS · Directions North America & 2021 Release Wave 1 plan for Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central
What's new in Business Central
Simultaneously with the 1st wave of Microsoft Dynamics 365 2021 release, our team attended Directions North America 2021, the partner event for Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central (BC). So here are the new features that caught our eye.
We’ve identified the Business central-related news that you’re most likely to be interested in from the following topics: Application ; Microsoft Teams ; Modern clients ; Development tools ; Onboarding.
BC APPLICATION
Dimension corrections for G/L Entries
Previously, a journal entry had to be made to correct a data entry error for dimensions. It’s now possible to correct dimensions on posted entries on the General Ledger Entries page to change the dimension values, add or delete dimensions. It is also possible to view the history of corrections made. Now, the Correct Dimensions action allows such a correction to be made more easily, thus increasing the accuracy of financial analysis.

Bank reconciliation improvements
You can now choose from a predefined list of allowed dimension values using Allowed Dimension Values in the Default Dimensions page.

MICROSOFT TEAMS + BC
Share any Dynamics 365 Business Central record with your team by pasting a link that will expand into a compact card directly into a Microsoft Teams chat.
Directly into Microsoft Teams, you can view all the details of a record as well as edit fields, launch workflows, and even more.
You can easily search for a Business Central contact using the search bar in Microsoft Teams, then view the information and share it in a conversation with your colleague.
*Compatibility: The only supported deployment type is Business Central SaaS and version 17.3 or later for the best experience.
MODERN CLIENTS
Following the success of the FactBox performance enhancements in the previous wave, several other usability improvements for the Business Central web client have been released, such as the consistent selection of full text when clicking on a field.
In addition, the loading performance of home pages and dashboards has been improved to load as the user scrolls through the content, allowing you to interact with the content more quickly.
Furthermore, the layout of some interfaces has been optimized, especially to be more responsive to all device types as well as screen and browser sizes. Here’s a roundup of some of the revised elements for a better layout:
-
- Dialogs are centered on the screen and the page caption is displayed first.
- Actions are all condensed into a menu.
- Duplicate titles have been eliminated.
- The report preview button returns to the request page.
- Scrolling is faster when doing an advanced lookup.

Finally, Business Central now supports the Microsoft 365 Universal Print cloud service, allowing Dynamics 365 BC documents and reports to be sent to any of the devices defined for printing.

MODERN DEVELOPMENT TOOLS FOR BC
Microsoft has launched the Report extensibility. This allows you to make various changes to a report (for example, adding a field) without having to make a copy of the report for each different custom version. This means that modifying a standard report is now easier and faster.
Also, more fonts to generate one-dimensional barcodes have been added in Business Central Online. This means you can now add barcodes to reports.

BUSINESS CENTRAL ONBOARDING
Additional features to support the user in finalizing the initial setup faster, including a Getting started checklist and In-app contextual help improvements as Teaching Tips & tours have been added throughout Business Central.
